WHAT HOT WATER IS REALLY DOING TO YOUR SKIN

WHAT HOT WATER IS REALLY DOING TO YOUR SKIN

If your struggling with understanding why your skin is not behaving the way it should the culprit could be right under your nose?

Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils because it disrupts the lipid barrier, which helps retain moisture and protect against environmental damage. The heat causes the natural oils (sebum) to break down and wash away more easily, leaving the skin dry, tight, and vulnerable to irritation. This is especially problematic for those with dry or sensitive skin, as it can exacerbate conditions like eczema and rosacea.

What to Do Instead:

  1. Use Lukewarm Water – Stick to lukewarm temperatures when washing your face and body to preserve the skin’s moisture barrier. Use a body moisturizer like Hydropeptide Lumifirm to do double duty of keeping your skin hydrated but also adding in a firming element.
  2. Limit Shower Time – Long exposure to water (especially hot) can worsen dehydration, so keep showers under 10–15 minutes.
  3. Use Gentle, Hydrating Cleansers – Avoid harsh soaps and opt for sulfate-free, hydrating cleansers that don’t strip the skin.  OM Organics and Hydropeptide are both incredibly beneficial skincare that we offer at the spa that will keep your skin barrier intact.
  4. Apply Moisturizer Immediately – Lock in hydration by applying a moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp. Look for ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin.
  5. Consider an Oil-Based Cleanser – If your skin is prone to dryness, an oil-based cleanser can help replenish lost lipids while still effectively cleansing.
